Charles Unruh teaching at Hardesty Library's Chess with the ChampsChess with the Champs
Hardesty Regional Library

During the summer of 2007, some of Oklahoma's strongest scholastic and collegiate players joined with Chess Adventure volunteers and OSCO volunteers to provide a free summer chess camp in Tulsa. Enrollment filled up quickly, and campers met once a week for instruction and fun. With almost 15 volunteers, campers often enjoyed individualized instruction. The camp introduced many new students to chess.

ThisĀ campĀ ended with a Saturday tournament and simul event. Trophies and medals were presented during an awards ceremony.

Next Steps for Chess

  • Join a school chess club. If your school does not have a club, you may want to start one. You will need a faculty sponsor and a volunteer chess coach. Feel free to contact OSCO board members. We love to help clubs get started! Detailed information on starting a club may be found at http://www.okschess.org/starting/index.htm
  • Purchase some chess training software. Chessmaster 10th edition is great software that includes interactive lessons and many playing levels for practice. This software may be purchased online through Amazon and other stores.
  • Once you have practiced, attend scholastic tournaments. A schedule of Oklahoma scholastic events may be found at http://www.okschess.org/events/schedule.htm
  • Look for additional chess camp and event opportunities. Also, watch www.okschess.org for Chess Adventure summer chess camp.
  • Play with your friends. A standard vinyl tournament chess board and regulation pieces may be purchased from such places as wholesalechess.com and cajunchess.com for under $10.
